Pourquoi : Why Can't Kiwi's Fly?

LI: To write a pourquoi (tell me why or how) story that paints a picture in the mind of the reader.

   

 This week our challenge was to write and illustrate a pourquoi story. A pourqoui is a narrative explaining why something is the way it is (for example, why pigs have curly tails). Pourquoi sotries are can often be legends and folk tales. Over the past few weeks we have been writing our pourquoi stories, and have created illustrations, to entertain younger students. I worked with Haylee and Taheesha. Our pourqoui story tells "why kiwi's can't fly".  This morning we presented our stories to Room 2 and 4, and they loved listening to them. I enjoyed these writing lessons, as we were able to use creative ideas for our story. I really enjoyed creating the illustrations too, as it was fun drawing to show the juniors instead of telling the story without any entertaining drawings.

Why Is It Important To Make Wise Choices?

Have you ever made wise choices? Wise choices are important, as it helps lead towards the right path. Wise choices are an important thing that not many people think about, especially when it comes to plastic pollution. In beaches and environments, people have been throwing plastic, constantly every day!

As a result of plastic increasing around the areas, sea animals have been harmed and suffocated, due to the bad choices we have made. Have you ever cared about how sea animals feel and react when they swallow plastic? Imagine if you were in a sea animal’s position, dying and feeling their pain. Because of us, we have been using plastic constantly, leading to the death of sea animals.

The majority of plastic has ended up in drains, leading to the oceans, rivers and lakes, the habitat of sea animals. Many people have access to the facilities of plastic, but why aren’t they doing anything to stop this situation. In a few years, we could’ve decreased the amount of plastic polluting our oceans. Because of our choices, this leads to consequences, and consequences lead to affecting our environments, oceans and sea animals.

What if your favorite beach was filled with plastic, and couldn’t swim anymore, due to your actions? This is what could happen in a few generations, if we don’t do anything about it. Imagine if all sea animals had died and you couldn’t eat fish and chips or any cultural and special dishes, consisting of seafood! It's time to put a stop to using plastic, for a safer environment.

We need to act now and make wise choices throughout our life, to have a cleaner and healthier future generation! 

This week in writing, we practiced writing explanations for our assessments next term. This is an explanation that tells others why we should make wise choices when it comes to plastic pollution. For this explanation we did 5 minutes of planning and 40 minutes of writing as this is how much time it takes for our assessments. After writing our explanations, we proof read our explanation and used DRAFT (delete,rearrange, add, fix and talk), so there aren't any mistakes.

Rock Climbing Experience

It was our first day of our vacation in Las Vegas. Early in the morning, at 5:00 o'clock I was eager to rock climb a famous mountain called Mount Dew. Ever since I was 3 I had always had a hobby for rock climbing. I forcefully woke up my friends, Chloe and Kim and dragged them by their wrist, into the car. It was a long and exhausting ride to Mount Dew, since I was the one driving. As we arrived at Mount Dew, I was fascinated by the height of the mountain. Both Chloe and Kim were very tired and angry for waking them up this early. We wore our rock climbing gear and started to climb this amazing mountain. As we rock climbed this tall cliffy mountain, I could already see the wonderful view of the sunrise. My eyes were focused on the breathtaking sunrise of a range of red, yellow and orange hues, which had beautifully blended in together creating a gradient colour. As I was rock climbing, my muscles started to tense as  I held a grip. I couldn’t imagine how beautiful the view from Mount Dew was. The sun appeared onto my fingers, as I was climbing. Only halfway through rock climbing I felt my sweat dripping through my face. After a few hours, Chloe, Kim and I were exhausted, as my heart beated, with sweat all over my face. We had finally reached the top of the mountain, when I was astonished by the view. All the rock climbing was worth the view. After a while, Chloe, Kim and I climbed down and drove back to our hotel. This was the best journey!

LI: To use 10-5-7-10-10  to write creatively.

This week in Writing, we used the 5-7-10 method to write a creative story, but this time we changed the method into 10-5-7-10-10. We added an extra 20 minutes, 10 minutes to plan and the other 10 to draft. My story is about three friends who go on a journey to Mount Dew to rock climb. They get amazed by the spectacular view. This method was easier to use, because there was time to plan, so we could have ideas on what to write for our story. I really enjoyed writing this story, using this method.

Lightning Never Strikes Twice

My family, friends and I, had just arrived in San Francisco for our Summer holiday vacation. It was a cold night, when my two friends, Cassidy, Christy and I decided to explore the area. We were already 2 kilometres away from our hotel. A big storm had just occurred, when we could see a windmill nearby. Boom! Lighting started striking, as my friends and I raced our hearts out to the windmill, because it was the only shelter nearby and we heard that we could get electrically shocked by the harsh lightning. It was as if lightning struck twice at the same moment. I couldn’t believe my eyes, when I saw the huge lightning.


 The lightning was nothing that I have seen before. Cassidy, Christy and I quickly crouched inside, huddling together, next to a pile of dusty sacks in the base of the windmill, because it seemed like a stable structure. We were terrified as we could hear the loud bangs of the lighting striking towards the ground. I could feel my heart beating repeatedly.

 After being in the uncomfortable windmill for a while, in relief we suddenly stopped hearing the loud bangs of the lightning. Even though I was terrified, I went outside and in relief, the storm had ended. Both Cassidy and Christy came out of the windmill and were so relieved. We all ran back to our hotel and were so glad that we safely got back. It was a miracle that my friends and I didn’t get struck by the crude lightning.


LI: To use the 5-7-10 method to write creatively.

This week in Writing we used the  5 - 7 - 10 method to write a creative story. This story is about a few friends who arrive in San Fransico, and explore the area. Harsh lightning suddenly occurs, so they run to the windmill, since its the nearest shelter. For the 5-7-10 method, we first wrote our story for 5 minutes, we talked to a partner for 7 minutes each and wrote the rest of our story for 10 minutes. I really enjoyed writing this story, as a start of term 3.

Ancestor Poem

LI: To write a poem to describe your ancestors using the literary devices of alliteration, onomatopoeia, metaphor, simile, hyperbole and rhyme.

Our ancestors from our cultures have inherited special treasures through many generations, in which we should be very grateful about. This week for writing, we wrote a poem to express our cultures and ancestors to others. These poems included literary devices, making it more poetic. An example of a metaphor in my poem is “ They are a shooting star that have helped me succeed “. While writing this poem, it reminded me of the knowledge and treasures our ancestors have given us. This poem has given me a better connection with both my ancestors and culture.

LI: To practice learning suffixes. 

This week for Steps, the activity that I practiced learning was spelling difficult words that included ability. In this activity, the words would pop up, so we could see how its spelt. Then we wrote it down. If we spelt the word incorrectly, then it would show us how to spell it. I really enjoyed this activity, as it helped me with my spelling.

Exploring Provocation

This week we have been exploring both sides of a provocation. A provocation is an action or speech that triggers someone's emotions. Our provocation was 'Should NZ become a cashless society?. After considering both perspectives (sides) we think we shouldn't have a cashless society, because not only can cards be scammed, but also people without cards wouldn't be able to buy anything from stores.

Explanation | Plastic Pollution

Why plastic pollution is a problem for our coastlines?

Did you know, each year over 1 million marine mammals are suffering due to the plastic we are wasting? This is not okay! These marine mammals have been suffering from plastic, whether they mistake plastic for food, or even get captured in it, which makes them not able to digest. Plastic has a large effect towards our marine mammals. Plastic is a large, serious issue in our environment! Would you like it if your favourite beach was filled with plastic?

According to ecotricity, scientists have estimated that about 8 million tonnes of plastic have ended up in our oceans every year. The number of plastic waste ending up in oceans could decrease up to a higher number, unless we do something about it! The majority of plastic that lies on the ground ends up in drains, which then leads to our oceans, lakes and rivers. There are New Zealanders out there who have access to facilities for plastic, but why aren’t we doing any better for our environment?

Did you know that plastic takes about 1,000 years just to biodegrade! Plastic doesn’t actually fully degrade, it only disintegrates into smaller particles. About 252,000 tons of plastic are also headed into our landfills every year. A project “Love Your Coast” is one of the projects that are acting now to help have a healthier and cleaner future. Love Your Coast has organised groups of people from around New Zealand to help clean up our oceans and beaches, so our next few generations could be better.

We should act now, so we could have a cleaner future and environment. You could save the lives of marine mammals, by picking up at least a few pieces of rubbish!

LI: To collaboratively structure and write an explanation. This week for writing, we wrote explanations to practise, for our assessments next week. In groups we wrote an explanation about why plastic pollution is a problem for our coastlines and marine mammals. We researched information to add to our explanations, to make it more detailed. Something that I found interesting was that plastic takes 1,000 years to biodegrade and how 252,000 tons of plastic are on landfills every year. 

Shoes Story | Personification

Shoe Personification Story

After waking up from a long nap, it was time for me to get to work. I could smell the stench coming from her feet as she stepped into me. I could feel my whole body getting compressed by her feet. Ohh ! I was so glad that it didn’t start raining. If it did rain my perfectly styled hair would get wet and it would be all messy. As I was walking, I could see many shoes all dirty and scruffy. I felt like I was the only perfect and clean pair of shoes, but then I saw my worst nightmare, a muddy puddle. I was doomed, as my owner stepped into the puddle. I held my breath tightly as well as my mouth. When I opened my eyes in relief, gasping for air, I saw my whole body covered in mud. I guess my owner doesn’t really care about me. As my owner stared down at me, I gave her a dirty evil look. She gasped as she saw how dirty I was, but it was too late. If only she used those two eyeballs in her head then I would still be looking perfectly fine. I could still feel mud stuck in my teeth. I was still mad at my owner after a long day of work. Finally, she took me off as I was tossed into the washing machine. I started dancing with the bubbles. After a long shower I felt fresh and clean. I felt dizzy as I came out of the machine, but I could finally relax after a hard day of work.

This week in writing, we learnt about personification. Personification is giving non living things human abilities. To understand more about personification, in partners we wrote short personification sentences about shoes. We pretended that we were the shoes. For this activity our challenge was to not talk to each other while writing and turning back to back. As Haylee and I were writing, we thought about personification and the 5 senses, which are feel, taste, look, hear and smell, to help us. We also thought about the shoes perspective. Haylee and I did a great job writing this story without talking. 

Student Leader Explanation

                                     Why I Should Be Manaiakalani Leader Of 2020?

What is a leader? I think that a leader is encouraging and helping people with different things. I think I should be Manaiakalani Leader next year, because I think that I have the ability to confidently represent the school with digital presentations. I would like to take this opportunity to become a role model to the younger children. Our 2019 manaiakalani leaders have been role models, but now it’s my turn to become a role model to others and show my digital work.

For the past few years I have been working digitally and have presented many DLOs to the class. I may have been nervous, but every time I have presented, my confidence gets a boost. As a Manaiakalani leader I can show what our school is really like, the best digital school! I am confident and will be even more, if I present more DLO’s to different schools around our Manaiakalani cluster as the 2020 PBS Manaiakalani leader.

Presenting to the cluster might even help the visiting teachers learn about new things. As a leader, I would help younger children and teachers with blog posts and digital learning. Right now, I have published and shared with my global audience 853 blog posts! These are made up of learning we do in school, Summer Learning Journey challenges and photos that show others the work we do in LS2.

I think I would be a great representative and asset of Panmure Bridge School and to other people too. I have made animations, digital drawings, maths games and have helped others digitally, which shows I have a wide range of the digital skills needed to be a Manaiakalani leader.

I think that I’d be a great ambassador to Panmure Bridge and to our Manaiakalani cluster!

Explanation Practice

Why We Should Show Respect, Empathy & Tolerance To Different Cultures?

Do you ever show values to different cultures? Well, it’s important to show respect, tolerance and empathy to other people, whether it’s their culture or their belief. We probably dislike some cultures, but we still have to show these values to other people. What if someone didn’t show any respect, tolerance and empathy to your culture or beliefs? If you don’t show values to others, than you won’t get the same values back. Would you like it if you didn't get the same respect?

Respect!What is respect? Well respect is showing manners to others. We should show respect to these different cultures. It doesn’t matter if you dislike cultures. As long as you respect different cultures, other people will respect yours. Show manners and you’ll receive manners back. If I have a friend and I dislike their culture I am still respectful. Not showing respect can lead to other people being offended and angry. Showing respect is the best policy, just like empathy.

Empathy is understanding other people, like their different cultures. Showing empathy to different cultures can really help you learn more about these cultures and you might even have an interest in them. I understand some of the different cultures, and you should too. This is why we should show empathy too.

What is tolerance? Tolerance is when you accept other people’s likes, cultures and more. Accepting these cultures are also very important. We should accept all the cultures, like we accept our own. We may dislike some cultures, but we should still accept it. What if your culture and beliefs weren’t accepted? If we don’t show tolerance, than we we won’t receive it, with our cultures. To receive tolerance you need to show it first.

This is why we should show these different values. Even if you dislike cultures, at least show respect, empathy and tolerance. Remember if you show these values you’ll receive it as well, from other people!

Advertising | Team Jerseys

This week in writing to understand more about advertising, we created an advertising poster to sell a RWC (Rugby World Cup) item. For this task I worked with Joel, Miiana and Sandra. The item we decided to sell were the rugby world cup team jerseys. For this poster, we tried to include as much different and convincing sentences and language to persuade others to buy the team jerseys.

Let Me Tell You About...

LI: To understand more about using commas. This week in writing, we learnt more about commas, by writing about our favorite cultural celebration including commas. My cultural celebration is Eid. We first wrote for 5 minutes, then shared it with a buddy for 7 minutes and wrote for another 20 minutes. 

Let me tell you about my favorite cultural celebration, Eid. Eid is celebrated on Monday, 3rd of June. Every year, when it’s Eid I always wake up early and get dressed quickly to go to the mosque. As soon as I see my parents I say,” Eid Mubarak”. When we arrive at the mosque, I quickly greet my relatives and talk to them for a while, until we start praying. After we pray, I rush to the table of food. On the table of food, there are biscuits, chocolate, juice, muffins and many more.

Once the mosque finishes, we all go around to different people’s houses. My favorite part of going to their house is the desserts they provide. I get full, but still, eat. My favorite dessert, when I celebrated Eid this year, was the honey cake and the cupcakes my sister made. At my relatives houses, I talk to them and tell jokes and riddles to them. I have a lot of fun celebrating Eid with my relatives.

After, we go to their houses, we come home and eat. Sometimes we go out and eat at restaurants. My family and relatives give me presents and money, because it is a tradition. My most favorite part of Eid is enjoying my time with my family and earning all these presents and money. In the end, we enjoy our time together.

Explanation:Should NZ Ban Plastic Straws?

Have you ever thought about what a single plastic straw could do to our environment? Well you’ve probably used plastic straws all the time. You probably haven’t realized, that you have been harming creatures using plastic straws!. Well plastic straws can be really harmful to many creatures. Can you guess how many years it takes for plastic straws to biodegrade? Well did you know that plastic straws take about 500 years to break down. These years are more than our lifetime.

If you think about it, there are many micro plastics in oceans around the world, which can poison and effect these poor creatures. On the news, have you seen many creatures getting hurt and being harmed by plastic straws?. If you have, do you ever feel sad, would you ever give up using plastic straws?!. Plastic straws can be really harmful to these creatures. Do you want to see creatures to stop breathing and start bleeding?. This is what plastic straws can really lead to. Creatures swallowing plastic straws can even affect them from digesting food!.

Almost everyone in this world, uses plastic straws while others have done the right thing and stopped using plastic straws. It's time for us to make a big change and ban plastic straws. About 65,000 plastic straws have been laying on the beaches in NZ. Plastic straws lead to a lot of pollution. Between 5 to 10% of plastic straws are being filled up on beaches. Plastic straws are a waste of using, because once you use them, it’ll be thrown out, so why have plastic straws?

Plastic straws are harmful, dangerous and poisonous to these creatures. In a few years there will be more plastic than creatures. Think about all the fish that would be gone in a few more years. How are we going to have fish and chips if there aren't any fish? How are we supposed to eat our favorite dish that includes fish, but there isn’t any fish? This is what plastic straws can really do to these creatures.

This is my opinion of plastic straws! I won’t change my opinion for the fact that these poor and helpless creatures are being hurt. We need to and we should ban plastic straws immediately!, for the safety of these creatures.

Point Of Views Of Plastic Straws In NZ

This week in writing, we learnt about provocation and created a DLO about the different perspectives of plastic straws. For the different perspectives we included facts and reasons to back up each perspective. We also added our opinion of plastic straws. Perspective, is different sides of articles, speeches and more. A fact is true information which can be checked. Provocation is when you trigger the readers feelings about a certain topic like plastic straws, in a speech. Lastly an opinion is your beliefs and feelings of a topic. My opinion of plastic straws is to stop using them. This is my opinion because plastic straws can damage sea creatures and animals health and life.

Persuasive Speeches

LI: To write a speech that persuades others to think the way you do. For the past few week in writing, we wrote persuasive speeches to convince others to believe and think like we do. In small groups or to the class, we read our speeches to each other and marked them. I was with Haylee and Miiana. When I read my speech to Haylee and Miiana, I did have confidence in presenting my speech to them. To have good marks, we used eye contact, expression and hooking our audience with language features. In my speech I think I did good with writing good reasons to back up my opinion and using some language features. I think that I need to improve on using more powerful words to hook the readers into my speech. I also need to improve on adding more information about cigarettes.

Why We Should Ban Cigarettes

Salam, I’m Sakina. Would you like it if one of your family members had suffered from diseases just because they smoke? Well, in my opinion, I think that smoking just isn't right. There are people out there, who have died or suffered because of cigarettes. I feel really sad for the number of people who lose their relatives or family members as a result of smoking, but it's their fault for getting into this kind of situation and starting to smoke in the first place!.

Cigarettes are really harmful to human health. There are many dangerous and life threatening diseases, such as lung cancer, heart disease, strokes and many more. More than 4000 people die from smoking each year in New Zealand. In a decade there might be more than 40,000 people who die from smoking. We need to start making our place a better environment by banning smoking!.

Most smokers probably smoke in public areas or around their family. Smoking needs to be restricted from these public areas, because secondhand smoking is a real issue. Secondhand smoking is when others inhale the smoke from the smokers around them. Secondhand smoking is just as harmful as smoking yourself. If someone is addicted to cigarettes they might choose to spend money on cigarettes instead of food for their families. Cigarettes cost around $30.00 per pack. You can buy clothes or food rather than buying cigarettes each week. Would you like it if your family spent $200 a week on cigarettes. Smoking in front of kids or children, might even encourage them to smoke when they're older.

Smoking is really harmful for everyone. Cigarettes include about 4,000 harmful chemicals which can be extremely dangerous and damage your health. There are 3 main harmful chemicals, which are nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar. Tar is one of the toxic chemicals in these cigarettes. Nicotine is even worse. It's a poisonous chemical made from tobacco plants. These chemicals in cigarettes can damage health. Who would ever think of smoking if they knew how many chemicals there are in cigarettes? I wouldn’t smoke if there was even one single chemical included in these cigarettes. Look at all the dangerous, toxic, poisonous chemicals which can really ruin your life and health.

We need to ban smoking to have a better and healthier environment. It would be even better if all the smokers out there could quit. Remember smoking can cause a lot of problems for everyone. Do you want to be someone who causes problems, just because of smoking?. Think about all the harm that smoking can do to you and the people you care about. Step up and have a better environment!. We need to and we should ban smoking for a better environment!

Information Report|Emperor Penguins

This week in writing, we learnt how to write an information report. The purpose of an information report is to inform others about a topic/subject. The structure is tips, which stands for title, introduction, paragraphs of information and summary. Some of the language features we need in a information report are formal language, technical words, scientific name of animal, subheadings and present tense. This week we wrote a information report about any type of penguins. We made notes about penguins with a partner. My partner and I decided to write notes about Emperor penguins. After that we individually wrote our information report using the notes we wrote.

Emperor Penguins

Emperor penguins, also known as Aptenodytes forsteri are known as the tallest penguins out of 17 penguin species. These penguins mostly live in the coldest country in the world, so that means that they live in Antarctica which is in the Southern Hemisphere. Did you know that there are about 220, 00 pairs of Emperor penguins. Emperor penguins can dive into the sea to about 550 metres below!. Would you be able to swim 550 metres deep?. No other penguin species can dive that deep. While in the sea these Emperor penguins can hold their breath underwater for 20 minutes!. There are fascinating things most of us don’t know about these Emperor penguins.

Emperor penguins are the height of about 1.3 metres tall and weight 25 kgl!. Penguins have a special type of oil on their feathers, which they preen. Penguins have blubbers that keeps them warm from the cold. When there's really bad weathers like hurricanes, penguins huddle together in a circle to keep each other protected. Penguins have a black head, white belly, a beak, flippers and small feat which makes it hard for penguins to walk. Their white bellies can actually be camouflaged when in the sea. You can’t see their ears, because it’s actually covered with feathers.

Emperor penguins are carnivores who feeds on fish, krill (which are crustaceans), squid (which are cephalopods) and other small sea animals. Penguins can’t taste the food they catch, so they swallow it full. Penguins catch their food one at a time. When there is a egg, the mother searches for food while the father looks after the penguin egg. The mother comes back after 2 months with lots of food enough for her egg. Penguins need to be on the lookout of any predators, like seals( which are mammals), orcas ( which are killer whales) , sharks ( which are fish), sea lions ( which are mammals from the group pinnipeds), leopard seals ( which are seals that are the second largest from the species of seals) and many more.

Emperor penguins live mainly in the Southern Hemisphere in Antarctica, where the sea, snowy mountains and ice is. Some other species also live in Antarctica, but they also live in Australia and Africa. Would you be able to survive in Antarctica?

Did you know that penguins can’t cry. There are about 17 species of penguins!.  Penguins mostly spend their time underwater rather than on land. Emperor penguins are wonderful penguins. They are the only penguins who breed in the winter season.

Stretching Sentences

This week for our writing session, we learnt about stretching sentences. Stretching sentences includes the 5 w's and 1 h. After learning about stretching sentences, we wrote sentences, than stretched them out. Once we did that, we created a DLO about stretching sentences. We included our example of stretching sentences, the purpose and how to strecth sentences.

Why does plastic bags harm our planet?

Did you know that almost everyday people use single use plastic bags? Not only does single use plastic bags harm our environment, it also harms our planet. These can effect a lot of lives around the world, like sea animals and even people. Now that people know about the causes that single use plastic bags do, shops around the world have been banning them and replacing the single use plastic bags with reusable plastic bags.

The reusable bags can be used over and over again whenever we go out to buy grocery.  If we keep up with the reusable plastic bags, we can change our environment where there wouldn’t be any single use plastic bags. Many people around the world have signed the petition to stop single use plastic bags.

It’s amazing that people have been taking matter in their own hands with the single use plastic bags. The single use plastic bags go to three main places, which are oceans, litter and landfills. It really harms the world, because single use plastic bags break down till 400 years. Over 10 billion plastic bags have been used every year in Earth. The sea animals would be in danger with the single use plastic bags around.

When plastic bags go into oceans the sea animals would eat them, because they think that it is jellyfish, but it's really not. In a few years plenty of sea animals would die, because of us using the single use plastic bags. Also when the plastic bags are around the place, people can get cancer. We have to put a stop to this, so that there is no damage done to our planet. What if in a few years there were single use plastic bags all over the place?.

This is why we shouldn’t use single use plastic bags anymore. Let’s keep our world clean by not using single use plastic bags anymore. We need to reduce the level of single use plastic bags, then lives. If everyone bans these plastic bags, then we can change the world.

This week we got into partners or groups, and checked each others writing samples. We used the PBS writing rubric to see which level we were on. I was with Mele and Marieta for this task. After checking which level we were on, we gave feedback to each other and to our selves, like what we need to work on and what we did good. Above is my writing sample and also my groups feedback and mine. 

Sketchnote|Explanation

This week for writing Ellenora and I created a sketchnote about explanation writing, to show our understandings. First we wrote the information we already knew about explanation writing on a piece of paper. After that we did speed dating to share our ideas. It wasn't exactly speed dating. With our partners there were two lines. We had to share our information about explanation writing to different partners. We only had 1 minute to talk to each partner. After one minute we moved onto the next partner. The next day we created a digital sketchnote to show our understanding about explanation writing.
