Reading Presentation

For the past few week we have been reading and creating DLO's about the Horrible Histories books, in partners. My partner was Haylee, and for the past weeks we have been reading Henry VIII. Henry VIII was the king of England who married 6 women for a son. The pattern was divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived. For this book Haylee and I decided to create a kahoot and a 5 sentence, 10 syllable summary about Henry VIII and his 6 wives. After creating the DLO and kahoot, we presented it to the class, so they could learn what we learnt about king Henry VIII. Most of the class got the questions correctly for our kahoot. From this book, we have learnt about the recent events about Henry VIII. Something that I found interesting was how Henry VIII had six wives, just because he wanted a son.

Summarising | Protests In NZ

Our summary- The history of New Zealand protesting started years ago. What were they protesting? One of the first New Zealand protests were between the Maori and Pakeha in 1881. Government were taking land for settlers - destroying fences to make way for new roads. The people of Parihaka used passive resistance to peacefully protest. The Women's Suffrage was a significant protest to New Zealand. Countries from all around the world in 1893, were discriminating and giving titles to women. It wasn’t an equal argument between men and women. Kate Sheppard was a brave woman who stood for her right and opinion. The petition had more than 500 pages and was signed by over 25,000 women.

Depression Riots 1932, A lot of people were unemployed and struggling. That's what made people think that the government wasn’t providing them with enough help and that's what started the protest. As Marches became Riots, messages became violence. A few months passing ahead, unemployed men fought with policies and smashed shop windows.


This week in reading, we read a book called "Protests in New Zealand". While reading the book, we did reciprocal reading as a group. This book is about all the protests that have happened in New Zealand, in the recent events, like women suffrage and the great strike. To understand more about the protests, we created a summary of it as a group, using the vocabulary we wrote while doing reciprocal reading.

Summarising The Main Ideas

This week for current events we found an article and summarise the main ideas. After we summarised, to make it more succinct, we turned it into a 10 syllable and 5 sentences summary. In this current events Sela, Haylee, Joel and I worked as a group and selected 1 of the topics which was “All Blacks defeat Ireland”.

The All Blacks are now in the semi finals playing against England later on. A big loss, but a proud achievement for Ireland reaching this far in the rugby world cup.

10 Syllable 5 Sentence Summary- New Zealand has won against Ireland. The All Blacks scored 46 to 14. 3 tries were scored by Aaron and Beauden. The Ireland team were disappointed. The All Blacks will now play against England.

Waltzing Matilda

This week in reading we explored a famous Australian ballad poem called Waltzing Matilda, by a famous poet, Banjo Paterson. This poem was about a swagman who stole a sheep, but the police came to catch him. Instead of going to jail, the swagman jumped in the waterhole. To learn and understand more about the poem, we wrote a summary and the main idea of Waltzing Matilda. For the main ideas there were 3 reasons to back up the main idea. There were some old words in the poem, which were: waltzing (walking on foot), matilda (swag bag), swagman (seasonal worker), jumbuck (sheep), and billabong (waterhole).

First Up Summary

This week for reading we read a new story called "First up". While reading the book, we did reciprocal reading with our groups. In partners or groups we created a summary of "First Up". For the summary I was with Rhys and Matthew. We wrote 20 important words and chose 6 of the most important words. After that we used the 6 words to make it into a sentence.

Space Race|Sputnik 1,2, & 3

This week for reading in our groups, we created a DLO about Sputnik 1, 2 and 3 of the story "Space Race". In our google presentation we needed to include a timeline of the sputniks, what each sputnik is, a explanation, a glossary and the 5 w's and h. Avalon and I worked on the timeline. Everyone presented their slides they had done individually or with their partner. I enjoyed presenting the timeline to my group and listening to others say their presentation.

Harry Potter & The Philosopher Stone|READING CHALLENGE

This week I decided to do the reading challenge. For the reading challenge I decided to read a mystery book called "Harry Potter & The Philosopher Stone.

This story is about a boy named Harry Potter whose parents died by an evil wizard, Voldemort. Harry Potter was famous because he didn't die when Voldemort tried to kill him. Harry Potter was living with his uncle, aunt and cousin for a long time. Another wizard called Hagrid came to help Harry collect all his wizard equipment for Hogwarts. Harry didn't know anything about Hogwarts and he didn't even know he was a wizard. At Hogwarts Harry met friends called Ron and Hermoine. Lots of things happened while in Hogwarts, like how they played wizard chess to get through to collect the philosopher stone which could keep you alive for years. Voldemort tried to take the philosopher stone away from Harry. At the end Harry decided broke the philosopher stone and all was fine.

Snake Skeleton Found In Poo|READING CHALLENGE

This week I decided to do the Reading Challenge. For the Reading Challenge there are different types of texts we need to read. The text type I decided to do first was the Newspaper Article.

Summary- This article is about how there was a skeleton of a snake which was found in poo. A person called Elanor Sonderman found the poo that was 1500 years old. Elanor Sonderman found it in Texas and studied the poo that had lots of information.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi

This week Marieta, Villami, Matthew and I worked together to create a DLO of a story called "Te Tiriti o Waitangi". In other words The Treaty of Waitangi. For this task we first read the story then moved on to doing the DLO. For this DLO we did a few reading activities which were vocabulary, summaries and seeing it from both sides. For the seeing it from both sides we needed to choose a question from the learning conversation slide.

SSR Selfie

This week for a daily 6 I decided to do SSR Selfie. For SSR Selfie you have to read a book and and retell it in your own words. The book that I read was Esio Trot. This book is about a man called Mr. Happy who loves a lady called Mrs Silver and flowers he had grown on his balcony. He would do anything to win Mrs. Silvers heart. Mrs. Silver only loved his tortoise called Alfie. Mrs. Silver wants her tortoise to grow. Mr. Happy helps Alfie grow bigger. Mr. Happy's plan was to find a tortoise that weighed fifteen ounces. Mr. Happy used a kitchen scale to find out how much tortoises would weigh. The next day Mrs. Silver was very happy because her tortoise grew bigger. One day Mr. Happy used magic and cabbage to make Mrs. Silver love Mr. Happy. 

3 Point Summary

LI: To write a 3 point summary about an article. This week for reading we had to read a book about the Annual Nuiuean Sports Day.  After we read the book we got to choose if we wanted to work in pairs or not. I decided to work with Victoria. Then we had to create a 3 point summary and the connections. For the 3 point summary we had to choose 3 of the W's out of the 5 W's. We decided to choose Who, When and What. After that we had to write the connections/relations to the W's we chose.
