Matariki Navigation & Harvesting

LI: To explain the navigation and harvests in Matariki.

This week, Florence, Afatia, Sakshi and I worked together to complete a Matariki activity. In our DLO, we explained how the sun, moon and stars are used in harvesting and navigation. An interesting fact that I found out about navigation and harvesting, is that when the stars were bright, it was a good signal of summer arriving. I really enjoyed learning about harvesting and navigation through the sky.

Matariki Venn Diagram

LI: To find out the similarities and differences between Matariki then and now.

Today we have completed this venn diagram. This venn diagram is comparing what people did for Matariki back in the day, and what they do now that is different. We also write what people do the same for Matariki. This DLO is created by Florence, Afatia, Sakshi and I. We all worked collaboratively to get 4 facts for each section. We enjoyed this activity as we were able to find out more on Matariki.

Harvesting In Matariki

LI: To explain what tools people used for Matariki.

Today Sakshi, Sakina and I created this DLO. This DLO that we created shows how the tools that Maori had were used. We also explained what tools they used. We added a picture showing some things they had harvested up. I enjoyed this activity because I was able to learn about the tools that Maori used to harvest.

Importance Of Matariki

To explain what Matariki is and why we celebrate it.

Today I have completed this DLO along with Florence and Sakshi. We all collaborated to collect the information about Matariki. We found out some facts and found out what is important about Matariki. In this DLO we added what Matariki was, What people do in the Matariki time, and of course why its important. I really enjoyed doing this activity because I was able to learn more about Matariki.

Matariki Summary

LI: To explain in fewer words what Matariki is about.

This week for Matariki, we completed different activities, to show or understanding about Matariki. Florence, Sakshi and I worked together to complete a summary about what Matariki is. In our summary, we included 20 important words, 6 of the most important words and summed up those 6 words to create a few sentences. Matariki, is a celebration which celebrates Maori New Year.

What Is Matariki?

LI: To use our knowledge, to explain what Matariki is. 

This week for Matariki, we completed different activities, to show our understand about Matariki. Florence, Sakshi and I watched a video to build up our knowledge about Maori New Year. We created a DLO, to explain what Matariki is. Our poster included, how Matariki is celebrated, what Matariki is, what Matariki means and a legend. I really enjoyed learning about Matariki. 

Matariki Celebration

Yesterday on Wednesday we had a Matariki celebration with the whole school. We did the Matariki celebration in the juniors. We sat on the benches. First some teachers spoke. Then there were performances. The first performance was the senior kapa haka. They did some dances and they also sang some songs. After it was the junior kapa haka. They also did some dances and songs. Once it was junior kapa haka three boys from our school and Mr. Matt did the drums. Then it was the ukulele group. There was only three girls and Whai Odie who did the ukulele. After it was the pacifica group. Three men did the drums for the pacifica group. They were really good. I think all the performances were awesome and they all were brave to show their performances to the school. They also just started last term and are very good. They practised a lot for the Matariki Celebration. Once all the performances were done the juniors had to line up on the right and the seniors had to line up on the left. We all got sausages. The vegetarians had to go to the kitchen to get sausages. I had to go to the kitchen because I am vegetarian. We had to get bread and Whai Odie put a sausage on our bread. We put some tomato sauce on our sausage. I had two sausages because it was yummy. I had a lot of fun yesterday celebrating Matariki. Whai Odie thought of doing the Matariki celebration and I think that Whai Odie is a amazing Maori teacher. 

Information about Matariki

This week for inquiry we made a DLO about information about Matariki. We were collaborating with LS2. First LS2 got into partners and chose two people from LS1. In my group I had Nyjah, Nicole and Chavda. After that we watched a video and set a 3 minute timer. We wrote down facts about Matariki on a piece of paper. Then we made a DLO. My group and I decided to do a google slide. For the google slide we wrote down information about Matariki. We used our smart searching skills to find information. We were talking with each other on what we would do. We shared ideas with each other too. I had fun working with LS2 and creating a DLO about Matariki.

Matariki

This week for Maori we learned a Matariki song. Matariki is Maori new year. Matariki begins on the 15th of June. We sang the Matariki song with Whai Odie a few times then Whai Odie handed out Maori word searches. I had to look at each row to circle the Maori words. I managed to find all of them. Once we'd finished the word searches we had to write the Maori song at the back of the word search papers. When it is the last Wednesday of the term we are going to celebrate Matariki. We are going to sing songs about Matariki, have a  sausage sizzle and share together at assembly. Today I had a lot of fun doing the Maori word search and learning the Matariki song. The Matariki song goes like Waiti, Waita, Waipunarangi, Tupuanuku, Tupuarangi, Ururangi e, Koinei nga tamariki o Matariki, Nga whetu e piatata i te rangi (x2).

Maori- Mataraki

This week for Maori we had Whai Odie. We were learning about Matariki. If we didn't finish our Pepeha's we had to finish it. First had to tell Whai Odie some things about Matariki. Then we had to get in partners. In our partners we needed one chrome book and had to find stories of Matariki on youtube. We needed to find four stories of Matariki. After that we had to tell Whai Odie some things we discovered about Matariki. Once we finished that we learnt a new song about the six sisters and the Matariki. We also sang another Maori song. Matariki is on June the 15th. When it is Matariki which is Maori new years we celebrate and have feasts. Matariki only goes on for once a year. Matariki in Japanese is called Subaru which is a car brand. Matariki in English is called Pleiades. Matariki is when there are seven stars in the sky which are Tupu a nuku, Tupu a rangi, Waipunarangi, Waiti, Waita and Ururangi.
