Making Connections With Problem Solving

LI: To explore problem solving.

This week, we learnt how to make connections, using Tangrams. We made Tangrams, as our internet connection stopped. A Tangram is an ancient Chinese puzzle, used to create different shapes and figures. In the 19th century, when Chinese were traveling to Europe to trade, they made Tangrams, using wooden blocks as they were bored. We started off with a piece of A4 paper and a pair of scissors, as we listened and followed a set of simple instructions. This procedure, was a way of problem solving. In small groups, we helped each other and communicated. We used our Tangrams to create different animals, by problem solving and collaborating with each other. While making animals, we tried different options, until we completed our animals. I really enjoyed learning and creating Tangrams, as it is a way of problem solving and working together as a group. This was a challenging activity.

Thinking Teams | Maths Questions

Today in maths, we worked in our thinking teams to find the answer to maths questions. In the photo you will see my group, "Less, Same, More", working out the number value of our group name. To do this we used addition strategies and our place value knowledge. In the second activity we worked as a group to put the population numbers in order, from the highest to lowest. To do this we used our place value knowledge.

Solving A Multiplication Problem

This week for another great day of maths, we learnt four new strategies which were rounding, reversibility, doubling and place value. We solved multiplication equation using the strategies we learnt. After that we created a DLO of a multiplication problem. I decided to do the airplane problem. The strategy I used to solve the problem was place value, because it works with bigger problems, like 1254 x 5. Once we created the DLO, we made a screen castify and explained how to solve the problem. I enjoyed solving the problems and learning new strategies.

E-ako Maths|Problem Solving-Frogs

For maths this week we started off with E-ako maths. E- ako maths is a game of maths where you answer math questions. There are a lot of categories you can choose from, like problem solving, additive thinking and a lot more. Answering all the questions correctly, can earn make you earn points and trophies.  I chose to do the problem solving. There are a few questions I have answered.

Kiwi Can

This week for kiwi can we had Mr. Matt and Ms. Lily. Our topic was problem solving and our theme was resilience. First we started with our energiser which was called Hoop de hoop. For hoop de hoop we got into two groups. I was in group one. Group one went on one side and group two went on the other side. There was hoops of the floor. One person from each group had to run to the furthest hoop. Then we had to stop if we were on the same hoop or if we were on different hoops. We had to at least be near the other person. Once we stopped we had to do rock, paper, scissors, shoot. The person who lost had to go back to their team. The person who won had to run to the hoops. If the person landed to the hoop near the other team, they won and got one point for their team. The group that had three points won. My group won.

Once we played hoop de hoop we sat in a circle and talked about problem solving. To solve problems like maths problems you can ask for help. The people you can ask for help is your friends, you family, your caregivers and your teachers. If you need help ask for help even if you think that people are going to say that you are dumb. Remember to not be afraid.

Once we did that we played Mat dodge ball. For mat dodge ball we got numbered one to five. I was number five. Ms. Lily called out a number. If she called out number two the people who got numbered two had to go in the middle. The other people had to try and hit the people in the middle with the ball. The people in the middle had to dodge the ball. If they got hit by the ball they had to sit down. The last person standing won. Everyone who won had to play. The winner of the game was Lorenzo.

Once we played that game we sat in a circle and did GKQ/General Knowledge Questions. We didn't have a buzzer, we had to shout out the answer. Two people had to stand up at a time. When I stood up I had to answer a easy math question.  After we did GKQ/General Knowledge Questions we went back to class.
