Summer Learning Journey|Wasting Away|Off the Menu
This week for activity 1, day 5 of week 2 of Summer Learning Journey, we had to tell what we think about how people get charged up to $100 000 for over fishing. I think that being charged up to $100 000 for over fishing is and isn't fair. It is fair because the fish are harmless and need to be safe. It isn't fair because $100 000 is a lot of money just for over fishing.

Talofa lava Sakina,
ReplyDeleteWell done on completing another activity! :)
It's a tough decision, isn't it? Like you said, $100,000 IS a lot of money. But I think that sometimes the consequences need to be harsh in order to deter (stop) people from breaking the rules in the first place. Plus, if we overfish to the point of extinction, the impact on our ecosystem could be catastrophic! And we don't want that.
There's an area just north of Auckland where fishing and diving is prohibited (not allowed). It's called Goat Island Marine Reserve; have you been? There's lots of beautiful, colourful fish there that have been able to thrive because people aren't allowed to fish them. Maybe we need more areas like that. What do you think?
Bye for now,
Mikey :)
Hi Sakina,
ReplyDeleteGreat job on completing this activity! I disagree with you, although $100,000 is a lot of money the fine is mainly aimed at big fishing companies. There's no way that any normal fisher could catch enough fish to tip the balance of fish in an ecosystem. If you could change the fine, what amount would you change it to?
