Tech | Graphics

This week was our last session of tech with Ms. Ferguson. We started off by finishing off our game pieces and boards. I was working on my connect four game. Since my counters were too big for my board, Ms. Ferguson cut them by 1 mm. I started by working on my base for my board, so it could stand. Ms. Ferguson gave us a challenge, which was to create a Halloween character or alien on tinker cad and thingiverse. For this challenge I decided to create a skeleton. I was really happy with how my game turned out and really enjoyed creating my board game, because it was my first experience. On our next rotation, we will have robotics with Ms. Munoz.

Point Of Views Of Plastic Straws In NZ


This week in writing, we learnt about provocation and created a DLO about the different perspectives of plastic straws. For the different perspectives we included facts and reasons to back up each perspective. We also added our opinion of plastic straws. Perspective, is different sides of articles, speeches and more. A fact is true information which can be checked. Provocation is when you trigger the readers feelings about a certain topic like plastic straws, in a speech. Lastly an opinion is your beliefs and feelings of a topic. My opinion of plastic straws is to stop using them. This is my opinion because plastic straws can damage sea creatures and animals health and life.

Reading Week | Statistical Analysis


This week in Maths, since it was reading week, we created a bar graphs which showed the statistics of our favorite book, authors, book characters, genre or illustrator. Before we did the statistics, we filled out a forum for this activity. For the statistical bar graph we chose which category we wanted to make a bar graph about. I decided to make a bar graph about our favorite books. When we created our bar graphs, we created another DLO, including what the data shows, the bar graph and the LS2's favorite books.

Reading Week | Setting


This week in reading week for our fourth activity, we created a DLO, describing a setting. We could choose from two settings, which was either the fun house or the castle. I decided to describe the fun house because it looked fun. For the DLO, I included adjectives and a paragraph to describe the fun house to the readers.

Tech | Graphics

This week in graphics for tech we finished off creating our game board and pieces. With my connect four game, I started off by sanding my boards. Mrs. Ferguson lazer cut lines, so I could glue onto my board. As I was gluing the lines onto my board, I carefully tried to find the center of the board. I tried to glue the lines quickly onto the board, so that the glue doesn't sink into the wooden lines, which mean the glue won't stick onto the board properly.

Reading Week | Aesop's Fable | Comic Strips


This week, it was reading week. For reading week we did different activities. The first activity we did was reading one of Aesop's fables and retelling it, by making a comic strip. Aesop was an author who wrote short stories about animals. The fable that I decided to retell, was the ant and the grasshopper. This fable is about an ant who works to get shelter and food in summer, but the grasshopper laughs and tells the ant to listen to his song. The ant would ignore the grasshopper and keep working. When it was winter the grasshopper was very cold, while the ant had shelter and food. The grasshopper decided to ask for the ant for shelter and food, but the ant told the grasshopper to go away, because he was working really hard for food and shelter. For my comic strip, I decided to use storyboard that. I enjoyed this activity

Reading Week | Reading Pathway


This week in reading week, for our second activity, we created a DLO about our favorite books when we were younger and now. When I was 5 my favorite book was we wish you a kiwi Christmas, when I was 8 my favorite book was the super chef contest from Geronimo Stilton, when I was 10 my favorite book was Esio Trot and right now my favorite book is Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone. This second activity was fun, because I was able to write about my favorite books when I was younger.

Reading Week | Joy Cowley


This week in reading week, for our third activity we created a DLO about a New Zealand author. The author that I decided to create a DLO about was Joy Cowley. In my DLO I included facts about Joy Cowley, the books Joy Cowley wrote, what inspired her to become an author and questions I'd ask Joy Cowley. Joy Cowley is an author who wrote children stories and some adult novels.

Persuasive Speeches

LI: To write a speech that persuades others to think the way you do. For the past few week in writing, we wrote persuasive speeches to convince others to believe and think like we do. In small groups or to the class, we read our speeches to each other and marked them. I was with Haylee and Miiana. When I read my speech to Haylee and Miiana, I did have confidence in presenting my speech to them. To have good marks, we used eye contact, expression and hooking our audience with language features. In my speech I think I did good with writing good reasons to back up my opinion and using some language features. I think that I need to improve on using more powerful words to hook the readers into my speech. I also need to improve on adding more information about cigarettes.

Why We Should Ban Cigarettes

Salam, I’m Sakina. Would you like it if one of your family members had suffered from diseases just because they smoke? Well, in my opinion, I think that smoking just isn't right. There are people out there, who have died or suffered because of cigarettes. I feel really sad for the number of people who lose their relatives or family members as a result of smoking, but it's their fault for getting into this kind of situation and starting to smoke in the first place!.

Cigarettes are really harmful to human health. There are many dangerous and life threatening diseases, such as lung cancer, heart disease, strokes and many more. More than 4000 people die from smoking each year in New Zealand. In a decade there might be more than 40,000 people who die from smoking. We need to start making our place a better environment by banning smoking!.

Most smokers probably smoke in public areas or around their family. Smoking needs to be restricted from these public areas, because secondhand smoking is a real issue. Secondhand smoking is when others inhale the smoke from the smokers around them. Secondhand smoking is just as harmful as smoking yourself. If someone is addicted to cigarettes they might choose to spend money on cigarettes instead of food for their families. Cigarettes cost around $30.00 per pack. You can buy clothes or food rather than buying cigarettes each week. Would you like it if your family spent $200 a week on cigarettes. Smoking in front of kids or children, might even encourage them to smoke when they're older.

Smoking is really harmful for everyone. Cigarettes include about 4,000 harmful chemicals which can be extremely dangerous and damage your health. There are 3 main harmful chemicals, which are nicotine, carbon monoxide and tar. Tar is one of the toxic chemicals in these cigarettes. Nicotine is even worse. It's a poisonous chemical made from tobacco plants. These chemicals in cigarettes can damage health. Who would ever think of smoking if they knew how many chemicals there are in cigarettes? I wouldn’t smoke if there was even one single chemical included in these cigarettes. Look at all the dangerous, toxic, poisonous chemicals which can really ruin your life and health.

We need to ban smoking to have a better and healthier environment. It would be even better if all the smokers out there could quit. Remember smoking can cause a lot of problems for everyone. Do you want to be someone who causes problems, just because of smoking?. Think about all the harm that smoking can do to you and the people you care about. Step up and have a better environment!. We need to and we should ban smoking for a better environment!

Representing PBS At Cricket


This week for an attitude care award, I created a DLO about the cricket inter schools. In the cricket inter schools my team and I worked together, and came third place. Even though we lost some games, we still tried. I really enjoyed playing the cricket inter schools with my team. This is my fourth attitude care award.

Tiny House|Perimeter & Area


For the last few weeks, we have been working on constructing a tiny house, in groups or partners. For the tiny house activity I was working with Haylee and Chavda. For this activity we used our knowledge on the perimeter, area and geometry. We created a plan to write down the measurements of the base, the roof and the furniture we needed. Then we started creating our tiny house. This activity was difficult, because of all the maths working out and the measurements we did.

This week in tech with Ms. Ferguson, we finished off creating our game pieces and our boards. For my game I decided to create connect four. For the counters I decided to make red and blue laughing emojis, that Ms. Ferguson had lazer cut. Ms. Ferguson also lazer cut the board I needed to create my game. I had lots of fun finishing of my game piece and boards.

Tech With Ms. Ferguson

This week in tech, we finished off creating our game pieces. The game that I decided to create was connect four, with emoji counters. On tinker cad, we made our game pieces to send to Ms. Ferguson, so she could print it on the 3D printer. Since I was creating connect four, my counters were lazer cut. For the counters I decided to make it blue and green laughing emojis. I used clay to make and practise making examples of the emoji counters.
